Biography

Captain Kevin Koch’s boating experience began in the early 1980’s at a young age. His love of sailing became evident when he learned how to sail a sunfish through his local Boy Scout program. From then on, most of his childhood summer weekends were spent on Summersville Lake either sailing or helping run dive excursions with his family dive shop.
After attending West Virginia State University Kevin moved to the Florida Keys to pursue a career in the diving industry. Starting out as Divemaster Kevin assisted and guided hundreds of divers on charters, by age 21 he had earned his U.S.C.G Captain’s license and began running dive charters out of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, FL. This was when he first began maintaining and repairing the dive vessels diesel engines and other systems. With the help of a coworker who was also a certified diesel mechanic it didn’t take long before Kevin had a good understanding of diesel and gasoline engines. In his free time Kevin would work on other commercial and private vessels for extra money. He developed skills in fiberglass repair, electrical wiring and diagnosis, varnishing and Awlgrip application techniques.
By 1989 Kevin along with his family opened Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Tavernier, FL where he worked as Captain, maintained the dive vessels and helped grow the business. Rainbow Reef became successful and was sold in 1999. By this time Kevin had developed a wide variety of gas and diesel engine mechanical and vessel repair skills and qualifications.  Rainbow Reef Dive Center is still operating as one of the major dive charter businesses in Key Largo Florida.
Kevin moved to Ft Lauderdale in 1998 with hopes of working as a delivery captain, he delivered vessels from as far north as Connecticut and south as Puerto Rico before finding himself working full time on a 130 Ft Dennison Motor Yacht as Engineer. This lead to other yacht jobs over the next few years serving as Captain, Mate and Engineer.
After returning to the Florida Keys Kevin recognized a need for a local collection site for random drug testing. All Charter boat crew members are required to be a member of a random drug testing program and at the time the closest place was on the mainland so Kevin opened the Keys Consortium in 2001, it quickly became the most widely used program in the Keys.  During this time Kevin Shared office space with Tom Eckhardt, a SAMS Marine Surveyor.  Kevin began working for Tom part time assisting him with Catastrophe event claims such as Hurricanes Ivan, Ike, and Wilma and on a regular basis transcribing surveys, assisting on fieldwork, researching vessel valuations, repair estimates and ABYC recommendations.
After selling the consortium in 2004 Kevin took time to outfit his 32 Ft Endeavor sloop and cruised the Bahamas for 8 months. In 2006 he returned to freelance captain work while maintaining part time work with Tom Eckhardt to further his Marine Surveying experience.
After moving to the west coast of Florida in 2009 Kevin obtained a position as an installer with a large marine electronics company based out of Naples FL where he designed and installed bow thrusters, marine navigation, security and entertainment systems on recreational and passenger carrying vessels. During this time Kevin became a certified N.M.E.A installer.
By 2012 Kevin had accumulated quite an array of technical and mechanical skills and experience. He is now a full time S.A.M.S SA Marine Surveyor serving Southwest Florida.
